Obituary for GERBER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday March 04, 2008

Robert A. Gerber, 73, a resident of Corrales, New Mexico, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Bob was born April 25, 1934 the son of Fred and Mabel Gerber in Donnelly, Minnesota. He lived a long and joyful life, full of family and friends. He had the wonderful gift of being a friend and, as a result, had many. Bob was in the Navy for four years. For twenty-nine years, he worked for Sandia National Labs in experimental physics focusing on fusion and pulsed power. He was involved in research on ionization and excitation of noble gases and the use of energetic electron beams for powering high intensity lasers for fusion applications. He also managed the Laser Projects Division which developed laser systems for simultaneous firing of the many switches required for the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator. Bob had a great, sometimes lascivious, sense of humor. He loved watching the news, eating bacon and eggs for breakfast, singing the Happy Birthday song for family and friends with little encouragement, eating peanuts and cashews, and giving big hugs. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, Heron Lake, and the geese and cranes flying overhead. Bob loved his wife (the fearless leader) and together they created a loving home. Bob enjoyed the activities of his children, especially their time swimming with Coronado Aquatic Club and the many road trips to swimming meets. Bob was proud of his children and their achievements and most modest about his own. He was the first in his family to get a Ph.D. Bob was an outstanding grandpa. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Fred (100), mother Mabel (102), and his brother, Ronald. Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marge; daughter, Sue and her husband, Hector; daughter, Lisa; son, Robert and his wife, Rose; grandchildren, Alexander, Isabella, and Stella; sister, Gloria Brouwer; mother-in-law, Lois Schueller; in-laws, Mike and Mimi Schueller; and various cats and dogs. The family gives special thanks to those who loved and supported Bob--Yemane Asmerom, Rab Freeman, Betsy Schultz, Ed and Carol Patterson, Lee and Elaine Heames, Bob and Norma Prew, Carolyn Tisone, Gail Johnson, and Bruce and June Johnson. A celebration of his life will be held at the family home in Corrales starting at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. The family is compiling a memory book and would appreciate your contributions. Please write down your memories and bring them to the gathering. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice.
