Obituary for ATENCIO

Gilbert Atencio passed away at his home Sunday, December 23, 2007. He was 94 years old. Gilbert was born in La Madera in northern New Mexico. He was a capable and talented individual. As a young man he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in New Mexico and Arizona. He retired from Sandia National Laboratories, where he was employed from February 1951 until July 1978. Before his employment with Sandia, he was employed by Los Alamos National Laboratories. Gilbert was a devoted husband and loving father who will be profoundly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Rose Candelaria Atencio. He is survived by his siblings, Dora Ortiz, Roy Atencio, and Eloy Atencio; his children, Priscilla Lovato, Lydia Vittitow and husband, Bill, Viola Atencio and husband, Leland Byers, and his son, Gilbert Louis Atencio; his grandchildren, Monique, Martin, Norah, Marc, Michael, Richard, Peter, Julie, Brian, and Matthew; and his great-grandchildren, Creede, Manny, Olivia Rose, Andres, Vanessa, Taylor, Alec, Christian, Joseph, Justin, Ben, Noah, Jacob, Emery, and Anika. Visitations will be held Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Carlisle Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services, with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. also in the chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 28, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, where Gilbert will be laid to rest beside his loving wife, Rose.
