Joan Thatcher Suits of Rio Rancho passed away on November 5, 2007. Born July 31, 1921 in Plainview, TX to Walter and Nell DeJarnatt Thatcher, she graduated from Plainview High School in 1938. Joan married Gordon Suits in 1942 in Chicago where he was stationed in the army. While he served in Europe during the war, she worked at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as a secretary for NBC. After the war the couple lived in Dallas as he continued his career at WFAA radio. They moved to Amarillo Texas in 1950, where Gordon was known on radio and TV as "The Red Robin". Joan had a successful gift shop and later worked as legal secretary to the VP of Shamrock Oil. In 1963 she became office manager for Lawrence Hagy, prominent oil and gas businessman in the Texas Panhandle until her retirement in 1985. In 1968 she served as president of "Desk and Derrick". After retiring, Joan and Gordon moved to Santa Fe and then Rio Rancho, NM in 1992. They spent many happy years roaming the country in their RV, making lasting friendships along the way. She especially enjoyed their cruises during the last decade. Joan will be remembered for her great beauty, graciousness, her wonderful sense of humor, and kindness. Joan was a devoted wife of 64 years; a proud and loving mother and grandmother. She loved her sisters, her nieces and nephews. Joan will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her husband, Gordon died on January 18, 2007. She leaves her daughter, Susan Dodge and husband, Steve; grandson, Brian and wife, Domi; granddaughter, Melissa; sister, Nancy and husband, Earl; and seven nieces and nephews. Private burial has taken place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, Albuquerque.
