Obituary for FIDEL

John Guy Fidel, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, October 3, 2007, after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, JoAnn S. Fidel of Albuquerque; their four children: John G. Fidel Jr. and wife, Amy of Albuquerque, Ray C. Fidel and wife, Kathi of Phoenix, AZ, Lisa F. Adams and husband, C. Kelly Adams of Albuquerque, and Stephen L. Fidel and wife, Frances of Albuquerque; and grandchildren: John D. and Alyssa Fidel of Albuquerque; Shaya and Travis Fidel of Phoenix; Nicholas, C.J, and Bryan Adams of Albuquerque; Robert Fidel of Oceanside, CA., Brianna, Hurley, and Libby Fidel of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his sister, Lou Delle F. Pongetti of Albuquerque; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. John was preceded in death by his father, John N. Fidel and his mother, Louise A. Fidel. John grew up in the El Fidel Hotel on the corner of 5th and Copper with his sister, Lou Delle, and his mother and father. He was known in the early years as "Johnny Guy" by family and friends. He attended Manzano Day School and Washington Junior High. After the death of their mother, he and his sister lived in El Paso where he attended Austin High School. They later came back to New Mexico and John moved to Santa Fe and graduated from St. Michael's High School where he enjoyed playing football and serving on student and civic governing activities. While in Santa Fe, he began dating his future wife, JoAnn Shaya. He attended The Colorado School of Mines where he graduated with a Professional Engineering Degree in Petroleum Geology. After working in the oil business for a number of years, he was manager and part owner of The Sundowner Motor Hotel in Albuquerque. During his fourteen years at The Sundowner, he developed a comprehensive computer program for the hotel industry in conjunction with IBM. John was a businessman, a Commercial Real Estate Broker and served on The Board of Directors of many civic, charitable, and professional organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, Albuquerque Boy's Club, Hotel and Restaurant Association, St. Pius High School, and Noon Day ministries. He was active in the Catholic Church where he taught The Life in the Spirit Course for twenty-two years and was involved with other Evangelical Churches and Christian activities in the Albuquerque area. He counseled with many individuals and taught at conferences and seminars. Above all, his deep faith in God and love of family and friends were the hallmarks of his life. He touched the lives of many people and he will be greatly missed. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service, Friday, October 5, 2007 at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, and Mass will be celebrated, Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2532 Vermont St. NE, with The Very Rev. Bennett J. Voorhies officiating. The interment will follow at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 7500 Paseo del Norte NE. Pallbearers will be John's grandsons: John D. Fidel, Travis Fidel, Nicolas Adams, C.J. Adams, Bryan Adams, Robert Fidel, and Hurley Fidel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of John G.
