Obituary for RUTGERS

Roger Gerald Rutgers, age 81, formerly of Lynden, Washington, passed away peacefully at Kaseman Hospital in the Hospice unit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Memorial in Albuquerque will be on October 3, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at the home of Rocky and Chris Hughes located at 211 Spring Creek Dr. NE. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 12, 2007, at 12:00 p.m. at the New Life Fellowship in Lynden, Washington. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Roger was born in Bellingham, Washington, on May 23, 1926, to Herman and Winnie Rutgers (Vandermay). He grew up on their farm located on the Jackman Rd. He married Alma Wenger on May 5, 1950, in Lynden, Washington. Alma passed away April 26, 2001, just days before their 51st wedding anniversary. Roger was needed at home in his early teens to work on the farm with his father. By then they had moved to the Vinup Rd. He did go back to get his diploma from American School in 1961. Roger worked for the Bellingham City Transit System and then drove for many years for Puget Sound Freight Lines out of Bellingham, Washington, retiring in 1990. When Alma retired, they enjoyed traveling and watching their children and grandchildren play in a variety of sports. They moved to Tijeras, New Mexico, in 1995. They were formerly members of the 2nd Christian Reformed Church and New Life Fellowship, both of Lynden, Washington. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, they joined Hoffmantown Church. Roger is survived by one sister, Rosemary Van Houten and husband, Jay of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three sons, Ron Rutgers of Lynden, Washington, Scott Rutgers and wife, Diane of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brent Rutgers and wife, Lisa of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three daughters, Sharon Hendricks and husband, Jack of Lynden, Washington, Shelli Miller of Williams Lake, British Columbia, Chris Hughes and husband, Rocky of Albuquerque, New Mexico; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
