Obituary for MCADA

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday August 30, 2007

Bobby Eugene McAda, formerly of Tucumcari, NM, died at the age of 75 in Niceville, FL on Monday August 27, 2007. His death was due to health complications related to pneumonia and a stroke. Bobby was born in Floydada, TX in 1932, graduated from Tucumcari High school and operated Gulf Gas Stations on Route 66 in the 1960s and early '70s. Bobby had been a resident of Florida for 22 years. He moved to Florida from New Mexico in 1985 to work with his son, Scott McAda, who owned radio stations in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Illinois. Shortly after arriving in Florida, Bobby had a serious hypertensive stroke at age 53, but fought to regain the ability to walk and talk despite overwhelming odds. Between 1986 and 1993 Bobby entertained radio listeners as "Pops the Old Geezer" along with his son, mornings on WZEP Radio Station in Defuniak Springs, FL. In daily life, Bobby's speech could be blunt. It was a characteristic that rubbed many the wrong way, but endeared him to others. When Bobby was able. he drove too fast, drank too much, partied at the drop of a hat and generally did not take care of himself. Despite the fact that he had serious health problems for the last 25 years of his life, he was a happy and entertaining person until the very end. Bobby held no religious or church affiliations and expressed frequently that he did not believe in an afterlife. He related the basics of Darwinian Evolution, as he understood them, to his son at a young age. He loved bars, drinking, strong language, old movies, and especially recollection of his vivid personal memories of his many exploits in life. Bobby will be missed by many and always remembered by even more as a "Unique Character". He is survived by his son, Scott McAda and daughter-in-law, Belinda McAda, as well as two grandchildren, Wesley McAda and William McAda. His sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Dave Scott of Roswell and his brother, Jimmy McAda, now residing in Oklahoma, also survive. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Bernice McAda of Tucumcari. Bobby chose to be an organ donor and the family was informed that others in need of living tissue would benefit from his gift of eyes, skin, and bone tissue. The National Cremation Society of Fort Walton Beach, FL has been entrusted with Bobby McAda's remains. Friends and family will have a private celebration of his life and memories at a local bar. We know he would approve by saying "All right!" if he could. The family extends special thanks to family Doctor Ken Haskin for his kind and compassionate care. Memorial donations may be made to the Meals on Wheels program of Okaloosa County Florida. Donations may be mailed to: Bridgeway Center, 137 Hospital Drive, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548, attention Senior Services.
