Obituary for STEWART

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 26, 2007

John Hogan Stewart, known to his many friends as Jack, died recently in Albuquerque. At 14, he wrote a column for the editorial page of the daily newspaper entitled, "The Younger Generation Speaks". In high school, he won a prize in the American Magazine's short story contest, and later an award from the Jack London short story competition. John served in the European Theater of Operations in World War II and was discharged with a service connected to twenty percent disability. He wrote professionally until his wife and two sons were killed in a one car accident. He then studied law, and served with one other person as a law clerk at the Supreme Court before the legislature created those positions. He was associated with Modrall, Sperling Roehl and Sisk, then with Smith Kiker and Kitts. In 1962 he opened his own firm, specializing in personal injuries law. A medical accident blinded him and triggered his retirement. His legal assistant, Pauline Harboldt, reported that occasioned 989 cards and letters from old and current clients. John lived in Albuquerque and Seattle and cruised the world accompanied by his youngest brother. He gave generously and anonymously to individuals and causes. The only public endowment was the creation of the Dean's whim fund at the University of New Mexico College of Law. His final wish was that his family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues and former clients set aside a moment in their day to think of him and bid him goodbye. Private services have taken place and his cremated remains are in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Daniels Family Funeral Services 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE Albuquerque, NM 87103 (505) 821-0010
