Obituary for NUNLEY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday August 16, 2007

Terry Emerson Nunley, Terry E. "Duke" Nunley, 79, of Albuquerque, died on Sunday, August 12, 2007, after a short battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Oklahoma City, OK, to Perry and Mildred Corbett Nunley, who preceded him in death. He attended the Ponca City Military Academy in Oklahoma and lived in Oklahoma and Texas until he joined the Navy. An east coast Sailor, he acquired the nickname "Duke" because of his Texas accent (and sense of humor) that he held on to in spite of never living in Texas again. Terry retired from the Navy in 1971 and relocated in Albuquerque where he worked for the City, retiring from the Animal Control Center in 1992. He was known for going the extra mile to contact owners whose pets were lost. Terry loved to drive long distances, loved any sporting event in which his family participated, and had a special place in his heart for children with special needs. He was known for his tall tales, sense of humor, love of a good meal and a good bargain. Patriotic, he was proud of his military affiliation and enjoyed his many connections with local law enforcement. He was especially proud of the many accomplishments of his entire family. Terry is survived by his loving wife, Marguerite V. "Peggy" Nunley, of 52 years, who he met and married while both were stationed overseas. He is also survived by his step-mother, Margaurette Nunley and her family of Brownwood, TX; uncle, Morris Nunley and wife, Pat, of Lubbock, TX; sister, Robbie Nunley Rogers, and family, of Odessa, TX. "Terry and Peg" had seven children and ten grandchildren; Steve Nunley and wife, Kim, and their children, Mary and Maggie; Chuck Nunley and his son, Johnathan; Commander Mary K. Nunley (USN) of San Diego, CA; Alice Nunley Bourgoine and husband, Tim, and their children, Caitlin (US Naval Academy, 1/C Midshipman), Emily and Ryan; Gretta Nunley Boyer and husband, Mark, and their son, Nathan Boyer; Paul Nunley and son, Andrew; Elizabeth Nunley Tingwall and husband, Steve, and their children, Jack and Danielle. The family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care provided by Dr. Jorge Sedas of Lovelace, as well as the entire staff at Carestone Assisted Living Center, their new home. The family would especially like to acknowledge the unconditional and loving care provide by Terry's daughters, Alice and Gretta, after their retirements from the Albuquerque Police Department. Additionally, we express sincere gratitude to the many friends who have become extended family members over the years caring for Terry and Peg. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request that you consider making donations to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, 87111 or Special Olympics of New Mexico, 6600 Palomas Ave. NE, Suite 207, 87109 .
