Dan Buzard, 39, of Portales, NM, was called by the Lord on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. Dan graced our life with laughter, humor, knowledge and caring love for everyone. He always had an open door and open heart to all. Dan always thought of others before himself. His presence and beautiful crooked smile always lit up the room. Dan graduated from ENMU with his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He was a student coach from 1989-1991, a graduate assistant coach from 1991-1993, an assistant coach from 1993-2002, and the head coach from 2003-2006 of the ENMU Women's Basketball team. He was named coach of the year of the Lone Star Conference in 2003-2004 school years. Dan met his wife, Jennifer Harrer, when she attended and pitched softball for ENMU. They dated for four and a half years and were married on June 5, 2004. Seven weeks after their wedding, Dan was diagnosed with brain cancer. The following month, Dan became legally blind, but continued his fight against the disease. In their three years of marriage, this disease did not deter his love for life. They traveled in the United States and Europe. Jennifer was loving, supportive, and positive force in his life. Others who aided Dan include his mother, Wilma, both families and friends. All gave of their time and energy to make Dan's life as normal and comfortable as possible. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Jerry; uncle, Gene Fraze; grandparents, Ralph Fraze, Travis and Catherine (Buzard) Clegg. Survivors include his wife, Jennifer; mother, Wilma Buzard of Portales; a brother, Scott Buzard and wife, Sandra; a niece, McKenzie Buzard of Portales; an uncle, Max Fraze; aunts, Kay Luce of Portales and Molly Anthony of Elida; father and mother-in-law, John and Sally Harrer; brother-in-law, Robert Harrer of Albuquerque; and grandparents, Zillah Fraze, Portales and Clarinda Harrer of Beloit, WI. And also his two beloved dogs, Hoops and Coach. "Dan, we will always hold you in our hearts and miss your beautiful crooked smile." There is open viewing at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales on Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be on Saturday August 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. The Services will be held at The Greyhound Arena on the ENMU campus. Officiating will be Rev. Wes McAfee and Soloist will be Marla Childers. Burial will follow at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers for Dan will be Robert Harrer, John D. Anthony, Mark Anthony, Bryan Luce, Brad Hill, and Danny Terry Honorary Pallbearers for Dan will be Wayne Moore, Bill Wahlman, Randy Hill, Fred Anthony, Max Fraze, and all his friends. An account has been set up "in Memory of Dan Buzard" at Wells Fargo Bank to assist the family with expenses.
