Obituary for BARRANS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday July 15, 2007

Marjorie Ruth Pattison Barrans, 90, took leave of her earthly life for a more blessed and spiritual journey on July 9, 2007 after a painful lengthy illness. She slipped peacefully into eternity and the loving arms of her savior at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Will Larson, in Cedar Crest, NM. This had also been her home since 1988. Mrs. Barrans was born on June 17, 1917 at Seven Oaks Dairy Farm, the Pattison family homestead built by her great grandfather, in New Castle, PA. She was the daughter of W. Walter and Jane A. Pattison. She graduated from New Castle High School, and went on to receive her license as a beautician. She worked in Washington, D.C. and Miami, FL as a beautician until the Second World War when she went to work for the Army in Reno, NV, as a civilian truck driver, carrying troops. She met Joseph Barrans in Reno and they married in July of 1945. They had one daughter. Mrs. B divorced in 1948 and returned to Pennsylvania to her family. In 1953, she moved to Albuquerque and has remained here ever since. She loved the wide open space of New Mexico. From 1955 to 1959, she owned the Ginger Bread Toy Shop in Old Town, which she started in an old vacant house that she cleaned out and renovated herself and later moved the store to the Patio Market behind the La Placita. After selling her store she went on to try her hand at many and varied jobs until in her retirement years, she volunteered as a "Grandmother" at YDDC. She was known lovingly as Gramma B by her own grandchildren as well as all others who knew and loved her. Mrs. Barrans is survived by her daughter, Beth; her son-in-law, Will; one grandson, Will Larson II and wife, Lisa Collins; one granddaughter, Erin, and husband, Steven Reil; great-grandchildren, Megan, Kiley and Natalie Reil, all of Albuquerque; her brother, William Pattison of Westland, MI; her sister, Marian and husband, George Ison, of San Antonio, TX; nephews, Bill Pattison and wife, Leslie of Camas, WA, and Roy Ison of San Antonio, TX; nieces, Gretchen Ison Smith, of Jackson Beach, FL, Karyn Ison Holly, and Erica Ison Alejos, both of San Antonio, TX; and many great nieces and nephews. She was kind and loving, hard working woman with a big heart and a great sense of humor, an eccentric personality and an exasperating knack for driving her family crazy because she was never wrong about anything. There was never an argument won by either side of a conflict or dialogue with Gramma B and yet she was loved for all of it. She will be missed terribly. If any one wishes to make a memorial in her name, please send a donation to: Adopted Families, in care of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Rd.
