Obituary for BOLTON

Ernest "Ernie" Lee Bolton passed away on June 30, 2007 of cancer. Ernie's family was with him to the very end. Ernie led a very interesting life. Born March 24, 1920, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at John Hopkins University. After receiving his degree Ernie worked at John Hopkins Laboratory for the U.S. government during World War II. During his time at JohnsHopkins Laboratory, Ernie's work was kept top secret, years after the end of WWII his work was disclosed. Ernie developed the Radio Proximity (VT) Fuse. This fuse is described as being second only to the Atomic Bomb as the most sensational scientific development. The fuse using radioactivity detonated enemy bombs, shells and rockets within 75 feet of their target. In 1948 Ernie and his family moved to Albuquerque to work at Sandia National Laboratories. Ernie never could tell his family what he actually did at Sandia but his duties involved purchasing and transportation. Ernie retired from Sandia in 1981. Through our his life Ernie dedicated most of his time to gardening and the Boy Scouts of America, on many occasions people would stop at Ernie's home and comment on how beautiful his yard is. The Boy Scouts of America was a major portion of Ernie's life, he started Scouting in 1933 and continued to be involved until his passing. In 1953 Ernie helped establish Troop 285 here in Albuquerque, a year later he became Scoutmaster and he held that position until 1976. In addition to being involved with Troop 285, Ernie worked with the Great Southwest Council in Albuquerque. With the Council Ernie held the positions of District Commissioner and Assistant Council Commissioner. Ernie earned a Bachelor degree, a Masters degree and a PHD in Communications through the Boy Scouts in 1988. In 1991, Ernie became Dean of Bachelor Courses in Scouting. After retirement Ernie and his wife Martha enjoyed traveling with friends in their RV. Ernie and Martha were members of the Roadrunners RV ground and the Thunderbirds RV group. Ernie is survived by his wife, Martha, they were together 65 years. Ernie (Grampy) and Martha have three children. Son, Dennis and wife, Sellaretta and their children, John and wife Melinda, Charles and wife Erin, Eileen, and David and fiancee, Kim. Ernie's daughter, Dale Hart and her husband, Bob and their children, Randall, Troy and wife, Nicola. Ernie's youngest daughter, Debbie Mondick her husband, Rick and their children, Jennifer and Christian and wife, Lindsay. Ernie was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. There will be a "Celebration of Life" Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sombra Del Monte Christian Church. The church is located at the corner of Phoenix and Utah. In lieu of flowers and gifts, Ernie requested donations to Boy Scout Troop 285 in Albuquerque. "And now may the great Master of all Scouts be with us until we meet again. May we run the race, at the great Scout's pace, up the trail, that leads to Him."
