Obituary for CARLSON

Bengt Carlson -was born in 1915 in Sweden. While working at the University of Stockholm from 1932 to 1936, he was persuaded by visiting Yale University professors to enroll at Yale, which he did, earning his degrees in mathematics. He became a U.S. citizen in 1942. In 1943, Carlson joined the British Mission in Canada, where he worked on Atomic research in connection with the Manhattan Project. In 1945, he was transferred to Project Y (Los Alamos) with his boss George Placzek and J. Carson Mark. Later, from 1951 to 1968, Carlson headed the Computing Center at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. He continued working at Los Alamos as a mathematician/numerical analyst until retiring in 1976. Carlson became a member of the American Mathematical Society in 1940. In 1951, he became a member, later a fellow, of the American Nuclear Society. Carlson was married to his wife Julia for 58 years, until her death in 1999. In 1952, they bought a house in Tesuque, in the country north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they lived for close to 50 years. In 2001, Carlson moved to El Castillo Retirement Residences in Santa Fe, NM. He is survived by his son, David and wife, Mary of Jemez Springs; and his grandchildren, Mica Tyler and husband, Todd of Rio Rancho; Lynn (Decol) Port and husband, Ross of Cornelius, NC; K. Perry Rutherford of Los Alamos; Jessica Callico and husband, Brian of Arvada, CO; and his great-granddaughter, Haley Juliana Callico.
