Obituary for DONAHUE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday April 12, 2007

Edwin George Donahue, passed away on April 6, 2007 at the age of 100. Born in Ringold, Texas on November 26, 1906, he was the last survivor of nine siblings. Edwin was preceded in death in 1998 by his wife, Velma (Andrews). Edwin is survived by his son, James and wife, Doris of Michigan; daughter, Andrea and husband, Scott Walker of Silverton, OR; and his son, Steven and wife, Paula of Albuquerque; three grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He grew up in Bonner Springs, KS and graduated from Kansas State University; then received his Master's Degree in bio-chemistry from Michigan State. With his bride Velma, he moved to Harbor Beach, MI in 1935. For thirty six years Edwin worked for Huron Milling Company (Hercules) as a Research Food Chemist. A leader in his community and the Methodist Church, he served as School Board President, Church Lay Leader and Adult Sunday School Teacher. Edwin bought a small farm and did part time farming at the same time. He singlehandly embarked on many projects including: gutting and redoing the house, planting 2000 pine trees in the woods, building a garage, repairing the barn, digging out the basement by hand, building a chimney, and building a road through the woods. (The latter three he accomplished when he was in his seventies.) Edwin retired from Hercules in 1971. Then Edwin and Velma joined Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), for three years, to help set up "meals on wheels" and congregate meals for retirees in Iowa, followed by serving two years in the Peace Corp where they taught school in Fiji. After returning via a six-month around the world trip, Edwin and Velma stayed on the farm until the 1980s and moved to twenty acres in rural Kentucky (and more projects). After Velma became ill they moved closer to their son, Steven, in Albuquerque in 1997. In his social life, Edwin was kind and considerate to others; in his personal life he was self-reliant, disciplined, and asked more from himself than he did others. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to La Mesa Presbyterian Church for their special help with the homeless. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW, ABQ. 505-343-8008
