Obituary for KELLEY

David Otis Kelley, 98, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, April 8, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Jean Leonard of Albuquerque; son, Dr. Robert Kelley and wife, Marcia of Laramie, WY; brother, Glenn Kelley of Lubbock, TX; grandson, Edward Leonard and wife, Cynthia of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Eydee Van Atta and husband, Bob of Long Beach, CA, Mona Krogstad and husband, Steve of Billings, MT, Jennifer Kelley of Albuquerque, and Karin Gerdts and husband, Michael of The Woodlands, TX; great-grandsons, Scott Van Atta of Agoura Hills, CA and Taylor Gerdts of The Woodlands, TX; great-granddaughters, Sky Van Atta of Los Angeles, CA, Rachel Wages and husband, Alan of Flower Mound, TX, Alyson McElwain and husband, Gregory of Nashville, TN, Nicole Leonard of Phillipson, MA, and Lauren Gerdts of The Woodlands, TX; and great-great grandson, Kaleb Wages of Flower Mound, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Onetia May; parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Kelley of Clovis, and brother, Clifford of Roswell. He was born in Newport, TX and at age 10, came with his parents and brothers to a homestead near Clovis. He was graduated from Clovis High School in 1927 and continued his education at the University of Southern California, earning the B.A. and M.A. degrees. During summers he did additional graduate work at the University of Chicago. He was a teacher librarian in the Burbank, CA secondary schools, and in 1937 became a professor-librarian at George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. He served as Assistant Director of Libraries and Instructor of Personnel Administration at the University of Nebraska, and Director of the Library School at the University of Kentucky. In 1949 he began as Director of the General Library of the University of New Mexico, retiring in 1973. He was a life member of the American Library Association, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Delta Kappa, and was in Who's Who in America. He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ, serving as an elder in two Albuquerque congregations. Family and friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Wednesday, April 11, 2007, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2007, 10:00 a.m., at Northeast Church of Christ at 11000 Paseo del Norte NE, with Dr. Gerald Kendrick and Mr. John Phillis officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
