Obituary for WEED

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday March 21, 2007

Janet Spangenberg Weed entered this world in Madison, WI on December 10, 1935. She was the only child of James and Winifred Spangenberg. She spent her early years in Barrington, IL but when her father obtained a position at Quaker Oats in Chicago, her family moved to Rogers Park where she resided until entering college at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. She was a combined history major and piano minor at Eastman School of Music and graduated in 1957 Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She also met her future husband, Chuck, at the University of Rochester and they were married June 10, 1957. Following her marriage, Janet continued at Eastman School and obtained a Master's in Music Theory in 1958. She then taught music in the Irondequoit school system while Chuck completed medical school at the University of Rochester. In April 1961, their first child, Jennifer, was born and, soon thereafter, the family departed for Seattle, WA where Chuck was to do his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Janet taught music in the Seattle school system and, in 1963, son Michael appeared. In 1966 the family came to Albuquerque where Chuck had taken a position with Lovelace Clinic and Janet taught piano in her home. Many of her students did exceptionally well in New Mexico state piano competitions. She also became very interested in singing and was a long standing member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church choir, performed in a local production of The Mikado, and sang with the Albuquerque Symphony Orchestra on a northern New Mexico tour under the direction of Yoshimi Takedo. She also was very involved with Friends of Music. Janet left this world very unexpectedly on March 18, 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer; son, Michael; former husband, Chuck; son-in-law, Jim Small; daughter-in-law, Rachelle; and granddaughter, Morgan Small whom she absolutely adored. She was a wonderful friend, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by many. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on March 31, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Instead of flowers, donations to Oxfam or Habitat for Humanity would be Janet's wish.
