Obituary for MERRITT

George Linton Merritt, loving husband, father, and friend, passed into the arms of our Lord on January 27, 2007, at the age of 80, after complications from pneumonia. His Christian devotion, steadfast nature, and pride in a job well done will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was born December 16, 1926 in Lucy, NM to the late Thomas Elisha and Rose Mae De Moss Merritt. One of nine siblings, George grew up on a farm in Estancia, NM. George was most proud of his World War II service, joining the Navy at age 17 on behalf of a grateful nation and serving 1944 through 1946 as Seaman on the aircraft carrier CV 36 Antietam, touring Hawaii Islands and the China Sea. George graduated from the University of New Mexico. Upon graduation, George moved to Houston, TX and began a 35-year career working in the petro-chemical industry, most notably with Brown & Root and Litwin Engineering. As a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church for 30 years, George enjoyed the Men of Action Breakfast Fellowship and was a member of the Probers Sunday school class. George was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lee, Robert, and William Merritt; and his sister, Tommy Vaughn. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Dana Glover Merritt; children, Barry and Dana Linn; granddaughter, Veronica; sisters, Opal Garland, Lynette Cox, Lucy Clark, and Ina Mitchell; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws. George was interred at private family military Service on January 30, 2007 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM, where brothers Robert M. Merritt and William C. Merritt, who also served in World War II, are buried. A Memorial Service celebrating George's life was held Friday, February 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Dr., and Reverend James McPhail officiating.
