Rebecca Sue Steel, 53, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on December 25, 2006 with her loving sons by her side. Mrs. Steel was born on March 9, 1953 to Talmadge Stanley and Alice Louise (Bobbitt) Brown of Durango, CO. Her family moved several times to places including Farmington, NM, Pampa, TX, Artesia, NM and Carlsbad, NM. Rebecca was a graduate of Carlsbad High School. In her youth she participated in activities such as Brownies, Girl Scouts, the 4-H Club, and the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. She is noted for volunteering over 100 hours as a candy-striper at the hospital. From 1971 to 1972 Rebecca attended Eastern New Mexico University and studied Dental Assisting and was honored as a Dean's List member. She worked as a dental assistant from 1972-1974. At that time, she trained in a Radiology Program at Carlsbad Regional Medical Centimeter from 1974-1976 and became a certified Radiologic Technologist. She was certified both Nationa1ly and in the state of New Mexico. Some of Rebecca's proudest moments are her marriage to Tom Steel and the birth of their children, Byron and Austin. She was also proud of watching her sons graduate from high school, watching Austin's graduation from Basic Training in the U.S. Army, and watching Byron's accomplishments in sports. Mrs. Steel was involved with the Assistance League of Carlsbad, the Children's Conservation League of Carlsbad, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, and participated in numerous church activities. She was nominated for the People's Caring Award in Albuquerque in 2003. Mrs. Steel was a co-facilitator for the Taylor Ranch Cancer Support Group for People Living Through Cancer in Albuquerque. Mrs. Steel and her family cherish their membership of Mesa View United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service Celebrating Rebecca's compassionate life will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. at Mesa View United Methodist Church, 4701 Montano at Taylor Ranch Road NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120. Her cremated remains will then be placed at the Memorial Rose Garden at Vista Verde Memorial Park.
