Obituary for CHAVEZ

Joe M. Chavez, 88, passed away December 11, 2006, at the Veterans Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Chavez was born in Santa Rosalia, Chihuahua, Mexico and became a naturalized citizen at age 8. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Southern Arizona when he was 15 years old which later brought him to Albuquerque where he worked in various restaurants. He joined the US Army during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea. He was wounded in the service and also contracted Malaria sending him back to the United States to a hospital in Santa Fe. Once he recovered, he returned to his work in restaurants and eventually learned the bakery business from several mentors. It was during his time at one of these bakeries that he met and married Rebecca Sanchez. He went on to own and operate a very well known bakery, the Ritz Bakery on North Fourth Street, for 20 years. Mr. Chavez will be remembered for being a loving husband, a very good father, and an all around good person. He was preceded in death by his sons, Patrick and Ramon. Mr. Chavez is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Chavez; sons, Ernest Chavez, and Joe Chavez and wife, Alma; sisters, Donna Torres, and Marci Almanza and husband, Vicente; brother-in-law, Richard Sanchez and wife, Frances; sisters-in-law, Olivia Castillo, Susana Baca, and Ramona Anaya and husband, Miramon; grandchildren, Eddie Chavez and Renee Chavez; and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Jennie, Brenden and Landon. All Funeral Services are pending and will be announced. Pallbearers will be Charles Perea, Eddie Chavez, Renee Chavez, John Sanchez and Max Castillo.
