Sammy Wilson Shaw, 78, of Mountainair, NM, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM. Sammy was born February 11, 1928 in Mountainair, NM to Mike and Modena (Chisum) Shaw. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers, JW Shaw of Mountainair, NM and Carroll Shaw of Fort Sumner, NM. Sammy is survived by his wife, Joyce of 59 years of their home; sons, Keith and his wife, Diane Shaw of Sylvester, GA; Kenneth and his wife, Venita Shaw of Mountainair, NM; three grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law; Heath and Jamie Shaw of Dawsonville, GA; Justin Shaw of Griffin, GA; Chad Shaw of San Antonio, TX; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Jerry and Marrion Shaw of Mountainair, NM; Ruby Shaw of Mountainair, NM; Helen Shaw of Ft. Sumner, NM; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Sam attended Mountainair public schools and graduated in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic. One of Sam's loves was sports where he excelled in baseball and basketball. His sophomore year the Albuquerque Journal considered him the best High School basketball center in the State. After High School he played professional baseball in the minor league division. Sports remained important to him through out his life as he was active coaching little league baseball and helping scores of local youth develop their talent. Before his health failed Sam was active in the community as a Mountainair school board member, and a member of the Mountainair volunteer fire department where he served as chief for a period of time. He was a long time member of the Mountainair Church of Christ. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Assembly of God Campgrounds in Mountainair, NM, Clifford Chisum and Nathan White will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Mountainair Cemetery in Mountainair, NM. Pallbearers are Heath Shaw, Justin Shaw, Chad Shaw, Ty Shaw, Kevin Shaw, and LeRoy Candelaria. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jimmy Sullenger, Manuel Quintana, Bill Arentzen, and Jeff Shovelin.
