Obituary for SMITH

Thomas L. Smith died on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 from sinus cancer and complications. He was born in Kingsville, TX in 1948 to George L. and Mary Smith. He was the second oldest of four children. Tom moved with his family to New Mexico in 1950, living in Los Alamos and Albuquerque. He then settled in Santa Fe. He graduated from Santa Fe High in 1966 and went on to graduate with a B.A in Sociology from New Mexico State University in 1970. He was then drafted into the Army and spent two years in Germany. Upon returning from Germany, he earned an MBA from New Mexico Highlands University. He then went to work for the C Y & F in Albuquerque from 1974 until 1976. From 1980 to 1990, Tom worked for the DFCA at the Fort Polk Army Base in Louisiana. He moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1998 where he worked for the Weslaco Border Patrol Station. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by Jol Smith, George L. Smith, and Lois Smith. He is survived by his sister, Tamara Gonzales and her husband, Alfonso; his sister, Nan McKinley and her husband, Gary; his nieces and nephews: Tiffany and James Mann, Ty and Jackie Dowdy, Tomlyn Dowdy, Ray Gonzales, Meghan Gonzales, and Jake Gonzales; and his great-nieces, Talyssa and Chloe. Visitation for Mr. Smith will be on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 from 10 to 11 a.m. at McGee Memorial Chapel in Santa Fe.
