Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday October 16, 2006

David J. Maness Born in Cleveland, OH and raised in Boston, MA he was graduated from Boston Latin School and Boston University with a B.S. in Journalism. He served with the Army Air Corps/Air Force as an Intelligence Officer. Maness was co-founder/editor for SPORTFOLIO magazine before joining COLLIER'S, where he was the Assistant Managing Editor from 1950-1956. He then worked on a precursor to the TONIGHT SHOW, before resigning to become Executive Editor of CONSUMER REPORTS. In 1961 he began a 25-year career at TIME INC., beginning with the Weekly LIFE Magazine as Articles Editor where, via telephone, he edited historian Theodore H. White's exclusive post-assassination interview with Jackie Kennedy that lives on for its invocation of CAMELOT. Maness was appointed an Assistant Managing Editor in 1969 where, in addition to White and other foremost writers of the time, Maness was Editor to Art Buchwald, Ray Bradbury, Loudon Wainwright III, and Sam Rosenberg. After the weekly LIFE was discontinued he signed on with TIME-LIFE BOOKS, first as an Assistant Managing Editor, and then Executive Editor, with responsibilities including all international editorial operations. In 1981, he was appointed Editor for Magazine Development, a post he held until becoming Assistant Corporate Editor. He left that job in 1985 specifically to edit and manage the production of LIFE--THE FIRST YEARS, a huge best-seller that was his professional swan song. Maness and his beloved wife Barbara E. Reed raised their family in White Plains, NY before initially retiring to Cape Cod in 1986, and later to Albuquerque, NM, where Barbara died in 1996. David succumbed to cancer at his home on October 12, 2006, just 3 days before his 86th birthday. He is survived by his daughters; Martha L. Maness, Laura A. Maness and Susan E. Maness; and grandchildren, Genevieve Studer and Benjamin Studer. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will follow at a later date. The family would like to thank Vista Care Hospice for their care of David. If desired, memorials may be made to the Environmental Defense Fund, NARAL, or The Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation.
