Richard (Rick) Carl Loner, born June 5, 1955 died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 from liver cancer. Rick was born in Norfolk, VA and moved with his family to Albuquerque at the age of 8. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank; mother, Lucy; and mother-in-law, Mary (Peaches) Martinez. Rick leaves behind his loving wife of 25 years, Therese Martinez-Loner; son, Nick 20, who attends the University of New Mexico; and daughter, Dominique, 8, who is a third grade student at Dennis Chavez Elementary. Rick will be missed by brothers, Frank Jr. and wife, Linda; Joe and wife, Judy Loner; in-laws, Gilbert Martinez, Larry and Robley Martinez, Pat and Richard Marquart, and Anna Marie and John Loughead. He is also survived by 28 nieces, nephews, and godson, Steven Marquart. Rick was a devoted father who was so proud of his children's efforts whether it was athletics, academics, or music. Rick worked in the water and wastewater utility business for about 30 years, starting as a young man and gradually working his way up to sales and management. At the time of his death he was employed at National Waterworks. He truly enjoyed the camaraderie while working with the staff from National and both staff and customers from all over the state of New Mexico will miss his positive attitude. Rick was known for his passion for all kinds of sports including fishing, football, baseball, basketball and golf. Rick loved to camp out with his family to enjoy a fishing trip or to just relax at the lake. He was an avid Packers/Yankees/Lakers/Tiger Woods fan, pick the season and he could tell the stats on his favorite team. Rick had been waiting for a liver transplant and was listed on United Network for Organ Sharing. Complications from cancer ended those plans this summer. It is his and his family's wish that all those who mourn him make the choice to be documented organ donors. For more information on how to become a donor visit UNOS.org. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rick's name are encouraged to the American Liver Foundation, NM Office, 1224 Pennsylvania St. NE, Ste. A, 87110.
