Dorothea L. Powell, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2006. She was born October 13, 1925 in Boston, MA to the late Winthrop G. and Dorothea L. Potter. She graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, MA in 1972. She retired from Boston African National Historical Site in 1988 as the 1st female park ranger. She and her husband relocated to Albuquerque in 1988. She was an active member of Grant Chapel AME Church, where she served as a senior usher, Steward, Missionary and secretary of the Finance Committee. She was also employed by the UNM Centennial Celebration Committee in Albuquerque. She is survived by her loving husband, LeRoy; daughter, Paula Sawyer; son, William Washington; four granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; six sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may visit Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. for the viewing on Friday, August 18, 2006 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Grant Chapel AME Church, 7920 Claremont NE, on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Interment is scheduled for Monday, August 21, 2006 at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Services are under the care and direction of: Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave. SE Albuquerque, NM 87106 505-842-8800
