Obituary for MCKENZIE

JAMES Dr. James McKenzie, BS, MS, PhD, PE, and member of the IEEE, passed peacefully at home on July 2, 2006. Dr. McKenzie was born on November 11, 1925 in Ashburton, New Zealand. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; his four children, Barbara, Pierre, Andre, Nicole; and his ten grandchildren. Dr. McKenzie had a distinguished career as a research physicist. Some of his notable accomplishments included: development and construction of the first atom smasher in the Southern Hemisphere, development of SPAR, the method used by the International Atomic Energy Agency for member nations compliance and verification under the Non-Proliferation Treaty for non-diversion of reactor fuel to an explosive program, and invention of a practical light-weight, portable, operator independent SPAR, which reduced equipment requirements and time needed for verifications. Dr. McKenzie also authored over 50 scientific journal articles, wrote a book regarding Semiconductor Detectors published by the National Academy of Science, held a U.S. patent for an aircraft altimeter, developed several types of gas radiation detectors, and provided counsel to Presidential Scientific Advisors. His work was recognized by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Bureau of Standards, and he was a world renowned expert who participated in numerous conferences and discussions concerning containment and surveillance of spent nuclear fuel.
