Obituary for SPICKNALL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday June 11, 2006

Gayla Lance Spicknall was born, May 30, 1954 in La Belle, Missouri. She passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Preceded in death by her father, Jerry Spicknall Gayla, is survived by her husband, Adam James Kittrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her mother, Elva Ruth Spicknall of La Belle, Missouri; her brothers, Leonard Alan Spicknall of La Belle, Missouri and Fred Harvey Spicknall of San Jose, California; three step daughters and many aunts, uncles, and friends who loved and will miss her. Gayla was twice a survivor of breast cancer and a constant warrior against it! The latest battle she waged lasted almost eight years. All who were around her during those times were amazed at the grace and composure she brought to the tireless struggle. The war ended at 2:24 in the afternoon. In the end she lost and won at the same time. What an Inspiration. A 1976 graduate of Stephens College in Columbia Missouri and 1981 graduate of Pacific School of Religion in Berkley, California, her life passions and vocation were service oriented. She was Interim Chaplain to the faculty, staff, and students at Stephens College for a brief time and North America Staff to the 28th General Assembly of the World Student Christian Federation. Along with many other distinctions she was also the Executive Staff for the Council for Ecumenical Student Christian Ministry with offices at 475 Riverside Drive in New York City. It was during this time that she and Adam met, romanced and took vows of marriage. After a few years they moved to New Mexico to take on different kinds of service challenges. Wherever she went she brought fresh delight to the earth, the birds, the animals, and the people. Her life was full of passion (especially for music, art, and horses). From early childhood she seemed to know how to engage the compassion of others to reach out for her causes. This became particularly true when her physical health limited her. What a wife! What a woman! What a wonderful human being! No doubt all the things she loved join us in a wish for her peace. It will be another 100 years till the world will see another 06 06 06 224 or another like Gayla. A Memorial Tribute For Gayla will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at her last residence: 814 Artie Road NW (Alameda, to Guadalupe, and left on Artie - 2nd house on right). Contributions and gifts may be sent to support the work of the New Mexico Cancer Center at 4901 Lang Ave. Albuquerque, N.M. 87109 or The Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospice 8300 Constitution NE. Albuquerque, N.M. 87110, where Gayla received such professional and compassionate care. Adam and her family. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th ST. NW. ABQ. 505-343-8008
