Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 21, 2006

Glade F. Sperry, Jr. AIA, 57, prominent regional architect, died May 12, 2006, at home in Albuquerque, following a valiant battle following complications from surgery related to a rare auto-immune disease - Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis. Glade was born at Wright-Patterson Airforce Base near Dayton, OH and moved to Albuquerque with his parents in 1959. He graduated from Junior College at New Mexico Military Institute in 1967 and from the University of New Mexico with a Master's Degree in Architecture in 1972. After attending UNM he started his architectural career with the firm of Antoine Predock and left in 1979 to start his own firm, Westwork Architects, with two partners, Lawrence Licht and Stanley Moore. Glade continued as President of Westwork Architects after the death of Licht and departure of Moore, and expanded the practice to include Cindy Terry as partner in 1992. Glade practiced architecture in Albuquerque for nearly four decades and was principal architect at Westwork Architects for the last three. His work was rooted in the landscape, history and spirit of the place in which he worked. His talent was the ability to create buildings which were unique expressions of and for his clients. He engaged his great knowledge of all things related to architecture and the construction industry to the benefit of those he practiced with and for. In making architecture, Glade concerned himself with all aspects of the practice - from the client's budget to the contractor's dilemmas. His career and his buildings were often recognized with awards from his peers and his community. His buildings are and will be constant reminders of his integrity, generosity and compassion. With unparalleled attention to design and detail Glade created many of New Mexico's architectural treasures. Glade's body of work ranged from large Educational Projects to smaller Residential Projects while maintaining the same care and quality for each. From its inception, the firm of Westwork, under Glade's leadership, garnered many design awards including the American Institute of Architects Western Mountain Region Firm of the Year award in 1993, as well as the AIA New Mexico Firm of the Year for Small Firms awarded in 1996. Many of the firm's projects designed by Glade singly or in conjunction with his partners were recognized for design excellence. A partial list of those award winning projects includes: North Barales Housing for the Elderly, Duncan Residence, Center of Non-Invasive Diagnosis, Londer Residence, Rogers Residence, Friedman Residence, Lewton Residence, Albuquerque High School Addition, McOlash Residence and Domenici Hall. Glade's work was well publicized in books and magazines including "Architecture Magazine", "New Mexico Magazine", "Su Casa Magazine", "Nikkei Architecture", "Albuquerque Monthly", "Albuquerque Living", "Sources in Design", "Custom Home", "Santa Fean", Santa Fe Design, Sporting Spaces, Pueblo Style and 100 of the World's Best Houses, Through the Lens, Shelter From the Storm, International Architectural Yearbooks Vol. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Southwestern Design and Southwest Expressions. A few of the better known recent works are the UNM Stadium L.F. Tow Diehm Training Facility, UNM Stadium North Endzone Seating and Improvements, New Classroom Addition to Albuquerque High School, and the recently completed Pete and Nancy Domenici Hall at the University of New Mexico which houses the MIND and BRAIN Imaging Research Facility. Glade is survived by his wife and business partner, Cindy A. Terry AIA; his daughter, Emily Sperry of Rochester, NY; his sister, Terri Carr of Anaheim Hills, CA; his sister, Kathi Hancock and husband, Jim of Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glade F. Sperry and Patricia N. Sperry. A Rosary was held 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel and a Memorial Service was held at 5:00 p.m., May 18, 2006, also at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel.
