Obituary for MALOTT

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday April 19, 2006

Irving Malott passed away April 17, 2006, at a local hospital after having been ill for several months. Born in Poland on February 10, 1922, Irving and his family immigrated to New York when he was four years old. After growing up in Brooklyn, he joined the Air Force in WWII and served in Albuquerque and Phoenix. He fell in love with the Southwest, later urging his sons to "go west." In 1975, he returned to Albuquerque and founded "Fat Humphrey's Hero Palace" on Central Avenue in Nob Hill, a landmark eatery for nearly 25 years. Many UNM students from the '70s to the '90s got their "carbo-loads" at the twice weekly "All You Can Eat" spaghetti dinners he served at student budget prices. Irving was also active in the Congregation Albert Men's Club, local Civitan groups, the Jewish War Veterans and other civic organizations. Irving is survived by Diana, his wife of 57 years as well as his brothers, Sol and Robert. He would likely say his proudest accomplishments were his two sons, Alan, and his wife, Linda, and Bruce, as well as his grandchildren, Brian, Daniel, Lauren, and Jillien, all of Albuquerque. He also had many, many friends that will long remember him, his card playing skills, and his vibrant sense of humor. Irving taught us to take care of one another, to treat others with respect, and to never be afraid to bet on ourselves. Thank you, Dad. All of us who knew you will feel both your presence and your absence forever. Services will be April 20, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in honor of Irving be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 2625 Pennsylvania NE, Suite 209, 87111 or the American Heart Association - NM Affiliate, P.O. Box 90790, 87199-0790. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333
