Stanley Chalmers Borthwick, 86 died at Carillon House in Lubbock, Texas on March 4, 2006, following a long involvement with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on November 25, 1919 in Denver, CO to Mungo and Jessica Borthwick. As a young man, Stanley attended high school in Santa Fe where he began working with Lembke Construction Company. He entered the Navy and served with the Sea-Bee's in the South Pacific during World War II. Following the war, he returned to New Mexico and resumed working with Lembke Construction where his first project was the Eddy County Court House. He eventually became president of Lembke and served until his retirement in 1981. During his years in the construction industry, Stanley was active in many professional organizations. He was a member of the Construction Specifications Institute, and served as president of both the Petroleum Club and The New Mexico Associated General Contractors' Organization. He also spent 15 years on the board of directors for The National Associated General Contractors and then became Emeritus. On November 2, 1940, Stanley married Rita Lucille Giannini of Albuquerque. Stanley's work in the construction industry allowed them to travel throughout the world. During their 65 years of marriage, they were jointly active in many civic and social organizations. Rita preceded Stanley in death on September 27, 2005. Public service through the Fraternal Organizations was a life-long interest. During the war, Stanley belonged to the Guam Square and Compass Masonic Club in the South Pacific. As a young man he first joined the Lions Club in Lovington and then in Albuquerque where he became president in 1947. During this time he also organized the first Lions Club on an Indian Reservation. He was president of the Albuquerque Rotary Club, where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Award. When he returned from the war, he joined The Scottish Rite, The Shrine, and became the potentate of Ballut Abyad Temple in 1978. He was also The Royal Director of The Royal Order of Jesters. As part of his civic involvement he served on the board of directors of Lovelace Clinic. Following his retirement, he and Rita moved to Ocean Hills, CA. Stanley joined the Al Bar Shrine Temple in San Diego and then organized the Ocean Hills Shrine Club. While in Ocean Hills he remained active as a Rotartian. In 2004, they moved to Lubbock, Texas to be closer to family members. Friends and family will always remember Stanley for his genuine good will, friendliness, and leadership ability. He was loved for his gift of story telling, his sense of humor, and for his generosity of spirit along with his love of butter pecan ice cream. Stanley is survived by his three children: sons, William of Albuquerque; James and wife Barbara of Lubbock, TX; and daughter, Sandra of Monterey, CA. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Brian Borthwick and Anita King, Lubbock, TX; Thomas Blakeley, San Jose, CA; J. Blair Blakeley, Los Angeles, CA; Jennifer and Heather Borthwick, Washington D.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Kate and Carlie Borthwick, Lubbock, TX. His only sister, Alyce Sugg of Albuqeurque also survives him. Family visitation and services will be held at Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave., Saturday, March 11. Visitation will start at 9:30 a.m., immediately followed by the services at 10:00 a.m. Interment is to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, Ballut Abyad Temple; 6600 Zuni S.E.; Albuquerque, NM 87108 or to the local Alzheimer's foundations.
