Obituary for PALM

Henry A. Palm, 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 12, 2006. He was born in Albuquerque to Samuel Augustus Palm and Angelita Madrid Palm. Henry was raised on the Palm ranch in Deming, NM. He played on the Deming Wildcats State Champion Football Team in 1933. He graduated from New Mexico A & M in 1939. Hank went into the United States Army in 1944. After completing Officers Candidate school he was shipped to the Pacific and later served in Japan. Upon completion of his active duty he remained in the Army Reserves until 1965. Hank served as a Director in the Farmers Home Administration and later for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 35 years, retiring in 1975. He managed state programs in New Mexico, Washington State, Washington, D.C. and Alaska and was awarded several Distinguished Service certificates throughout his career. Hank returned to Las Cruces in 1978. He enjoyed playing in many golf tournaments throughout the U.S.; he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and his late wife, the former Willa Jones, were married for 64 years and traveled extensively; surely they are once again full-time traveling partners. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 1119 in Las Cruces, role model for many, published Cowboy poet and teller of ranch history about New Mexico. Henry is survived by two sisters, Marie Stewart of Dallas, TX, and Susie Hosford of Las Cruces; sons, Sam Palm of Mesilla, David Palm of Albuquerque; daughters, Mary Callahan and Judi Thomas of Las Cruces; grandchildren, Lesly, Henry, Jared, Angelita, and Elizabeth; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Graham's Mortuary from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2006 and a Memorial Service will be Friday, February 17, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Graham's Mortuary Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in memory of his late wife, Willa, to the Lupus Foundation of America, New Mexico Chapter, 2917 Carlisle Blvd. N.E., Suite 103, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Service arrangements are with Graham's Mortuary, 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM.
