Obituary for HORTON

Betty Thorne Horton passed away Tuesday evening, February 1, 2006, at the Lovelace Hospital from prolonged complications of pulmonary disease in the last few years. Betty was 75 and was born on June 18, 1930, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and has been a resident of Albuquerque during her lifetime. Her parents were the late Richard W. Thorne and Fay Strong Thorne. Her grandfather was Harry Strong, a well known pioneer of Albuquerque dating back to the 1800s. She was married for 54 years to her surviving husband, Benjamin K. Horton, also a lifetime resident of Albuquerque. Betty was a homemaker and teacher having graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1947 and from UNM in 1951. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at UNM and a long time supporter of UNM Athletics, having sponsored numerous parties and dinners for various UNM teams in the 60s and 70s. Among her many activities were her memberships the First Presbyterian Church, the Lovelace Lung Gym Therapy Group, her PEO Women's Sorority Chapter as a past president, and the Animal Humane Society. She regularly enjoyed the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Fe Opera. Betty was the partner and co-owner with Ben of numerous buildings, storage units, and several subdivisions of adobe home compounds and apartments in the Western United States and a hotel in Mazatlan. Betty loved to travel, having cruised throughout the world 32 times and was very active socially. She was a previous member of the Roswell and Albuquerque Jr. Leagues. The love of her life was her many years as the owner of a large cabin on the Holy Ghost Canyon in Pecos, NM. She was usually accompanied by her white Shepard dog, Pearl. Betty is survived by her husband, Benjamin K. Horton; and by their three children and six grandchildren: Richard and Holly Horton of Albuquerque and their children, Miles and Savanna; Benjamin T. Horton of Colorado Springs, CO, and his wife, Sandy and their two children, Andrew and Jennifer; and her daughter, Rebecca Horton Cheney of Arlington, TX, and her two children, Alene and Matthew. Betty asked that in lieu of flower to make contributions to the Animal Humane Assoc. of NM, Inc., 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Funeral Services will be conducted at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, Saturday, February 4, 2006, at 3:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the family home.
