Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday February 02, 2006

Alejandrina Saavedra. In the early morning hours of January 31, 2006, Alejandrina Saavedra, daughter of Agustin and Aurelia Alfaro, went home to rest peacefully with her Lord. She passed as she lived - with dignity, compassion, humility and grace. Born February 28, 1910 near Yirisarri, NM, raised in Armijo in Albuquerque's South Valley, and a proud, long time resident of Barelas, she responded to the call of her forebears calmly and surrounded by the people she loved. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was married for over 67 years to Alejandro Saavedra of Armijo. Having borne only one son, Rosendo Saavedra, she was a mother to many, selflessly raising nieces and nephews as her own, including Vivian Alfaro, Nancy Alfaro, Paul Alfaro and Leo Gurule. Her light shines on brightly through the family she loved, prayed for, and nurtured. She is survived by her husband, Alejandro; her son, Rosendo and wife, Josie; Nancy Alfaro and Vivian Alfaro; grandchildren, Ruben Saavedra and wife, Sheila, Michael Saavedra and wife, Debbie, Jeanette Padilla and husband, Ambrosio, Alex Saavedra, Donna Lopez and husband, Anthony, Paul Alfaro and wife, Ericka, Leo Gurule and wife, Myra; Vivian's children, Anthony Alfaro and wife, Deborah, Virginia, Eddie, Laverne, Terry and Molly. She also leaves behind adoring great-grandchildren including: Alejandrina, Monica, Vicente and Emiliano Padilla; Elena Lopez; Jacqueline, Angelina, and Analisse Alfaro; Trent, Tiffany, Tyler and Adriana. She is also survived by nieces and nephews who saw her to the end: Lilly and Placido Salazar; Jenny and Ofemiano Martinez; Joe Alfaro and wife, Diana; Patsy, Lena and Lisa Lucero, among many other nieces and nephews. A heartfelt thanks to Jenny Martinez for those special moments of song and laughter that warmed the household through the smiles they lighted on Tia Alejandrina's beautiful face. The family would also like to thank Odyssey Hospice, particularly Dori, her previous nurse and especially, Christina, her nurse aide, for providing high quality care and being there for her. A Rosary will be recited Thursday, February 2, 2006 at Sacred Heart Church in Barelas at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 3, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. also at Sacred Heart Church, to be followed by a Christian Burial at El Campo Santo de San Jose on Arenal SW. Pallbearers will be Ruben Saavedra, Michael Saavedra, Alex Saavedra, Paul Alfaro, Anthony Alfaro, and Leo Gurule. Arrangements by: Salazar & Sons Mortuary 400 Third St. SW 247-4124
