Obituary for GRIDER

Russell Grider, 55, of Clovis, will be 2:00 p.m., Tues., Nov. 29, 2005, at the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. Russell was born Jan. 22, 1950 in Portales, to the home of Wanda and Robert Grider. He died Thursday afternoon, November 24th in Lubbock, TX. Russell was a farmer, rancher and self-taught historian and legal expert on agricultural law. He was the NM State Ethanol Fuels Coordinator in the early 1980's. For 13 years he coached girl's youth league basketball and positively impacted many girls' lives. He recruited and/or coached many teams under the AAU Program, and also founded and developed the Young Guns Athletic Club, Inc. Russell was currently the Chairman of the Promotion and Marketing committee of the NM Cattle Growers Assoc., a member of the International Trade Committee for R-Calf USA and a former member of the Trade Committee for the National Cattleman's Beef Association. He was also the current President of the Curry-Roosevelt New Mexico Farmers Union and a member of the Board of Directors of Curry County Farm Bureau. He also served on the board of the Institute for Consumer and Rural Studies, a non-profit group. Russell was a frequent speaker to civic, agriculture groups and government organizations regarding the current economic environment of the United States. Russell was a supporter and frequent guest on Prime Time Christian Broadcasting. He was married to Shelley Johnson on Dec. 16, 1988 in Farwell, TX. He is survived by his wife, Shelley of their home; a son, and daughter-in-law, Heath and Ginger Grider of Portales; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Sommer and Brad Garrison of Fort Worth, TX and Scarlet Grider of Nashville, TN; 5 grandchildren, Leah, Samantha, Jacqueline, Braden and Brett Grider; his mother, Wanda Grider of Portales; 2 brothers, Paul Grider of Melrose, NM and Kenneth Grider of Denver City, TX; 2 sisters, Vicki Ashley of Abilene, TX and Kathy Tivis of Floyd, NM. Mr. Grider was preceded in death by his father, Robert Grider in 1999. The family requests that memorials be made to PTCB, PO Box 61000, Midland, TX 79765. Services are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc.
