Obituary for DEVARGAS

Cipriana "Cipy" (Sanchez) DeVargas, 71, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 3, 2005. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a good friend to many people, she will be missed by all whom she touched with her love and friendship. Cipy was the eldest of four children born to Luis and Carolina (Montano) Sanchez in San Jose, NM on December 15, 1933. She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Joaquin "Jake" DeVargas of Albuquerque; three daughters, Theresa DeVargas and Gloria Garringer of Albuquerque, NM and Angela Edwards of Springfield, OH; two sons, Michael DeVargas of Corrales, NM and David DeVargas of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren; Sarah (Edwards) Riley and husband, Timothy, and Chris Edwards of Springfield, OH, Eric Lahr of Anaheim, CA, Jacob and Justin Cordova of Portland, OR, and Brittani, Ashli, and Mike DeVargas of Rio Rancho, NM; sister, Agapita (Sanchez) Lobdell of Los Angeles, CA; two brothers, Louis Sanchez of Glorieta, NM and Daniel Sanchez of Rogers, AR; an uncle, Roberto Montano of Santa Fe, NM; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Cipy was a devout Catholic and loved her church. She was a catechist for 20 years in the Religious Education program at The Shrine of St. Bernadette. She quietly took care of the flowers in the church on a daily basis for the last 15 years. On October 4, 2005, she was the recipient from The Shrine of St. Bernadette of the Archbishop's St. Francis of Assisi Award at the Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe, NM. In addition, she was an active member of the Altar-Rosary Society where she participated in many projects in support of the Parish and its ministries. As a young mother, she was a group leader with the Bluebird and Campfire Girls. She was also an outstanding Avon Sales Representative for 20 years and was awarded many honors for her excellent sales records garnering the President's Club and the Honor Society awards several times. She was an avid Lobo fan and followed the Lobo teams in all their games. She loved to bowl and participated in league play and was an avid bridge player for many years. A rosary service will be held Sunday, November 6, 2005, 3:00 p.m., at The Shrine of St. Bernadette, 11401 Indian School Road NE. Mass of Resurrection will be held Monday, November 7, 2005, 9:00 a.m. at The Shrine of St. Bernadette. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her two sons, Michael and David DeVargas, two brothers, Louis and Daniel Sanchez, and two nephews, Robert DeVargas and Jose Sanchez.
