Obituary for HESSE

Mary Greenslet Hesse, 75, died October 6, 2005. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 22, 1930, she spent her child hood in Santa Fe. Always interested in music she was awarded a music scholarship at UNM in her junior year by Sigma Alpha Iota, the professional music fraternity. She placed second in the San Francisco Opera Debut Auditions in 1957 and was offered a position with the San Francisco opera which was declined because of pregnancy. These auditions were broadcast over CBS. Mary sang the lead in well known operas such as Carmen in Carmen, Butterfly in Madama Butterfly, Mimi in La Boehme in Portland, Oregon and was instrumental in forming an opera support group that is very active to this day. Locally she was a member of the Albuquerque Civic Chorus and performed with various church groups. Mary was a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota. An elementary teacher by profession, she retired in 1983. Mary was recipient of the Sons of The American Revolution Martha Washington medal. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, James Hesse; a daughter, Lydia Anne Baker; and two grandchildren, Cole and Daniel Hammortree. Interment will be in the family plot in Denver at Fairmount Cemetery. The Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. October 15, 2005 at New Life Presbyterian Church, 5540 Eubank NE.
