Obituary for GRIEGO

Rachel Ann Griego, 22, of La Marque, TX, was born in Victoria, TX on May 29, 1983 and moved with her family to Lamesa, TX when she was a toddler. She lived in Lamesa 12 years through her freshman year of high school attending the Lamesa public schools. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Lamesa. The family then moved to La Marque, TX where she spent her final three years of high school at La Marque High School graduating salutatorian of her class in May 2001. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of La Marque. Rachel was an accomplished flutist receiving many medals in UIL solo and ensemble contests during her high school years. She continued her flute studies in college and was a member of the Wind Ensemble her first two years at Wheaton College and the Symphonic Band her final two years at Wheaton. She served as Chaplain for the Symphonic Band her senior year. Rachel was also actively involved with the Office of Christian Outreach (OCO) on the Wheaton campus. She went to England and the Netherlands with the Student Missionary Project, a branch of the OCO, the summer following her freshman year. This summer she just returned from six weeks working at a day camp for disadvantaged students in Washington, D.C. That program was a part of Global Urban Perspectives another branch of OCO. Rachel served as an officer on the Global Urban Perspectives cabinet her senior year. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wheaton College, May 2005 in Wheaton, IL (located outside Chicago) earning a B.A. in Psychology. She was a member of Wheaton College Scholastic Honor Society and PSI CHI a national honor society in psychology. She had been hired as a case worker in foster care for the Evangelical Child & Family Services, Wheaton, IL. Rachel was on her way to start her new career when, by way of an auto accident in Arkansas, the Lord called her to join him in heaven on Saturday, July 23, 2005. Rachel was dedicated in her service to the Lord as evidenced by her music and ministry. She is survived by her parents, Tony and Julie Griego of La Marque, TX; grandmother, Stephanie Griego of Albuquerque, NM; grandparents, Richard and Patricia France of Gansevoort, NY; sister, Carrie Griego of La Marque; and brother, Ivan Griego of La Marque; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 with Rev. David Black officiating at Abundant Life Christian Center, 601 Delaney Road, La Marque, TX 77568. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to: Wheaton College-Rachel Griego Memorial Fund, c/o David R. Lawrenz, Office of Development 501 College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187. Please specify if the funds should be directed to the Office of Christian Outreach (OCO) or to the support of music programs for non-music majors (Music). Arrangements are under the direction of the James Crowder Funeral Home, La Marque.
