Obituary for CHAVEZ

M.S. SAM CHAVEZ, age 82, of Santa Fe, passed away Monday, June 6, 2005, following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Chavez. Sam was born in Capitan, NM on February 27, 1923 the son of Fred and Juanita Chavez, who preceded him in death. He married Lucy Sanchez on June 2, 1946. He was a graduate of Capitan High School, then served with the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his discharge he returned to New Mexico where he joined the New Mexico State Police. He served with the State Police for 33 years, retiring as a Deputy Chief in 1982. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Socorro Knights of Columbus, the Socorro Lion's Club and the V.F.W. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lucy Chavez; five children: Michael G. Chavez and wife Judy N., Joseph F. Chavez Sr. and wife Elsie, Bill Chavez and wife Lorella, Cindy L. Abeyta and husband Juan, Sandra K. Armijo and husband Paul; brothers: Godfrey Chavez, Richard Chavez and wife Charlotte, Frank Chavez and wife Lorraine, Conrad Chavez and wife Sue; sisters: Josephine Chavez, Teresa Chavez, Agnes Dotson and husband Keith; sister in law, Mary Chavez; grandchildren: Dee Dee Chavez, Tony Chavez, Michael Chavez, Joseph Chavez Jr., Jason Chavez, Zachary Chavez, Rebecca Chavez, John Abeyta, Monica Chavez, Josh Abeyta; eight grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 9, 2005, 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
