Ruth In Memory of Dr. Ruth Lindsey October 26, 1926 - May 29, 2005 Dr. Ruth Lindsey was born in 1926 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. She graduated from high school in Checotah, Oklahoma. She earned her BS from Oklahoma State University in 1948, her MS from the University of Wisconsin in 1954, her Doctorate of Physical Education from Indiana University in 1965 and was certified as a Kinesiotherapist in 1970. Ruth was an instructor and on the faculty of Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1948-50, at Monticello College, Alton, Illinois 1951-54, and DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana 1954-56. She was a professor, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma 1956-75. Ruth's area of special interest was anatomy, kinesiology and corrective physical education. During her time on the OSU faculty, Ruth won the Oklahoma Women's Fencing Championship in May 1961. She was on leave from OSU as a visiting professor at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, 1975-76. She was then Professor of Physical Education, California State University at Long Beach, California 1976-88, and Professor Emeritus, California State University, 1988. Dr. Ruth Lindsey's professional awards and honors include: Amy Morris Homans Fellowship (an award given annually by Wellesley College for advanced work, research or publications in physical education), 1964; Meritorious Service Honor, Oklahoma Association Health, Physical Education & Recreation, 1970 for outstanding contributions to the profession as relates to teaching, administration, research and leadership in professional associations. She received the Meritorious Performance award from California State University, 1987. She was also awarded the Julian Vogel Memorial award by the American Kinesiotherapy Association in 1988 and a Fellow of AAH-PERD. Dr. Ruth Lindsey was a member of: American Kinesiotherapy Association; the California Association of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; National Council Against Health Fraud; the American College of Sports Medicine; the Orange County, California, Nutrition Council, and the Phi Kappa Phi. She was in the Marquis Who's Who 1971, 1974, 1975, 1994, 1995, 1999. Dr. Lindsey also was editor of "Perspectives," the Journal of Western Society for Physical Education College Women, from 1988 to 1995. She was author or co-author of 13 textbooks on physical fitness. Among these was "Fitness for Life, 4th Edition" with co-author Charles Coburn published by Scott Foresman, for which they received the Texty Award in 1997, in El-HI Communication/Education/Performing and Visual Arts from the Text and Academic Authors Association. That association also gave Dr. Lindsey and co-author Charles Coburn the McGuffey Award in 1998 for their book, "Concepts of Physical Fitness," published by Brown & Bench Mark. Her father, Lewis Howard Lindsey and mother, Kenyon Roberta Lindsey preceded Ruth in death. She is survived by her sister, Lewise Snyder from Albuquerque; brothers, Fred S. Lindsey from Carmel, IN and Gerald P. Lindsey from Albuquerque. Nieces are Becky Smith of Cloudcoft, NM, Jan Stiles of Modesto, CA, Cheryl Lindsey from Goshem, KY, Dr. Roberta Lindsey of Carmel, IN and Donna Mack from Las Vegas, NV; nephew is Austin Lindsey from Albuquerque. Ruth has six grand-nieces and five grand-nephews. Grand-nieces, Michelle Pixler of Osawatomie, KS, Heather Crain of Garden Valley, TX, Stacy Pulispher from Alpine, UT, Lucy Nisbet from Elk Grove, CA, Emily Dahlin from Longmont, CO and Jade Mack from Las, Vegas, NV. Grand-nephews, Sam Stiles from Ceres, CA, Grant Stiles from Modesto, CA, Justin Lindsey from Albuquerque, Dalton Lindsey and Marlin Lindsey, both from Las Vegas, NV. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Albuquerque. A second memorial service and interment will be held at Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, California on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn: Lorraine West, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, 87111 or Hoffmantown Baptist Church, 8888 Harper NE, 87111.
