Walter L. (Buddy) passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2005, in Lexington, Kentucky. Buddy graduated from Lenoir City High School in 1962. Although he left Lenoir City soon afterwards and spent much of his professional life in Colorado and New Mexico, he always considered the place of his birth his true home and wished to be laid to rest here. Buddy graduated from Berea College in Kentucky with a B.A. in Economics; he earned the M.A. in Economics from the University of Ohio and the Ph.D. in Economics from Colorado State University. He was Chief Economist for the U.S. Forest Service, Southwest Region, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before retiring in 2001. Much of his work in the years before retirement dealt with environmental impact studies. Old friends from high school days in Lenoir City will remember with great affection his pugnacious but always engaging personality, his radio announcing skills at WLIL, and his portrayal of "Charley's Aunt" in the senior play. In more recent years, his family and friends will recall with pride his indomitable will and courage in recovering from a massive heart attack in 1997. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin J. Stewart and Dorothy U. Stewart, both of Lenoir City. He is survived by seven siblings and their spouses, all of whom will sorely miss his lively wit and exuberant zeal for life: James and Alyce Stewart of Roanoke, Virginia; Barbara and James Posgate of Kerrville, Texas; Ruth and Joseph Story of Lexington, Kentucky; Linda and Clay Rivers of Lincoln, Nebraska; Charlayne and Nigel Allan of Davis, California; Kate and John Johnson of Lexington, Kentucky; Susan and Gus Smith of Guntersville, Alabama. While he had no children of his own, he was a much-loved and entertaining "Uncle Bud" to his many nieces and nephews. All of us who knew and loved him will long remember his perennial high spirits, his generous nature, and the magnitude of the heart that failed him much too soon. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Seay officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Dorothy U. Stewart Scholarship Fund at Lenoir City High School, established in memory of our mother who died in 1998.
