Obituary for EDWARDS

Russell (Eddie) L. Edwards, 84, a resident of Albuquerque passed away Monday, April 18, 2005, after a short illness. A devoted husband, father, uncle, and wonderful friend, Mr. Edwards is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Winifred (Freddie) Edwards; two loving daughters, Faith Edwards and Linda Webb and husband, Fred; sister, Evelyn Edwards, all of Albuquerque; and many nieces, nephews, and their children residing in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Virginia. Born to Bessie and George Edwards in Somerville, MA, February 3, 1921, he was raised in Natick, MA with five siblings. In 1941, at age 20, he worked for Civil Service in Panama to bomb-proof the Canal. Returning to Natick, he joined the Army, served in Europe, was captured in France and was a POW outside Munich, Germany the winter of 1944-1945. After being liberated, he rejoined the Civil Service in California where he met Freddie Wilson. They were married on December 31, 1946. They moved to Albuquerque in 1948 with their first child, Faith. Eddie took a job in Civil Service at Sandia Base (now known as Kirtland) and then their second child, Linda, was born. He began in 1949 as a cataloger and was asked to develop one catalog system to combine the four armed services catalogs. Eddie continued to work in cataloging in the pre-computer era and became Chief of Cataloging and Standardization. He was awarded the Defense Nuclear Agency Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, the highest civilian award, for establishing effective procedures to control data flow of nuclear ordinance data thereby eliminating a security threat by segregating nuclear ordinance data from other defense ordinance data. He retired in 1974. Eddie's hobbies included woodworking, landscaping, gardening, camping, and hunting. He and Freddie hosted numerous international students from UNM and The United World College of the Americas at Las Vegas, NM. A celebration of Eddie's life will be held with a visitation, Monday, April 25, 2005, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2005, 4:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. To honor his enjoyment of friends and family a festive reception will follow.
