Obituary for WELLS

Mary R. Wells, 85, a lifelong Albuquerque resident, died Friday, April 15, 2005. She was born on October 2, 1919 in Denver, CO. Mrs. Wells was a musician at Albuquerque High School and also the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from UNM and taught elementary school with the Albuquerque Public Schools. In July, 1943, Mary saw an issue of LIFE Magazine featuring a WASP (Women's Air Force Service Pilots) on the cover, and applied immediately as an aviatrix. She flew planes, instructed new pilots, and served in the U.S. Air Force until 1953. Mary loved to paint, gardening, and enjoyed her pet box turtles, golf, and travel. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, James Wells and a son, Joey Wells, both of Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at French Mortuary, University Blvd Chapel.
