Obituary for COLEGROVE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 20, 2005

Lois Gavin Colegrove, 79, a longtime resident of New Mexico, passed away suddenly March 7, 2005 in Santa Maria, CA where she had resided for the past five years with daughter, Abby and her husband, Tim. Lois was born March 2, 1926 in Jacksonville, FL to Clint and Gladys Gavin. She lived in Florida until age 12 when the Great Depression led her family north to Cleveland, OH where she lived until marriage to Jim Colegrove in 1947. She worked as "copy boy" for the Cleveland Plain Dealer where she met Jim who was a young reporter and photographer fresh out of the Army. Lois and Jim divorced in 1973 and while she suffered from depression for most of her life, she did not let that interfere with lovingly raising her four children. Lois was also an LPN working many years in Denver and Albuquerque. She was awarded the Florence Nightingale Award at Mercy Hosp./Denver for her competent and empathetic nursing. Lois was also a longtime member of PETA where she worked for animal welfare. Lois will be sadly missed. Survivors include Abby Hogan and Tim of Santa Maria, Pat Laub and Jordan of Portland, OR, Jim A. Colegrove and Cindi of ToHajiilee, NM and Kim Mellor and Keith of Corrales, NM. Grandchildren much loved by Lois are Satchel Hogan, Alex Laub, Jake, Adam, Iyani, and Sheri Colegrove, and Michelle and Hanna Mellor. There will be a Buddhist Memorial Service in Santa Maria. In addition, celebration of Lois' life and scattering of ashes will take place in New Mexico in July. Contact Kim, 896-3847 if you wish to attend.
