Obituary for GATHINGS

Nedra F. Gathings, 71, beloved mom, grammy, and resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Saturday, March 12, 2005. She is survived by her son, Darlan Rusch Gathings; daughter, Desiree Rachel Gathings and husband, Fredvic L. Zabala; grandson, Robert Brandon Zabala; granddaughter, Daisy Raquel Gathings Leon, all of Albuquerque. Nedra was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert O. Gathings on November 29, 2002. She was born in Hot Springs, AR in 1933. She attended and graduated from Fisk University in Tennessee where she received her Bachelor's of Science. Nedra was a social worker at Bernalillo County Medical Center (BCMC), then became a volunteer worker and homemaker while she raised her two children. Nedra was active in the NAACP and participated in lobbying efforts for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in Employment. She volunteered for many years at Presbyterian Hospital and served as President of the Women's Auxiliary. Nedra also volunteered for a number of years at the Rio Grande Chapter of the American Red Cross and served as Chairman of Volunteers. She was an active member and served office in various community organizations including Board of Prestige of BCMC, Las Amapolas Garden Club, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and National Council of Negro Women. Nedra also had a deep devotion to Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees including Committee on Lay Leadership, Pastor Parish Relations, Trustees Committee, Finance and Education Committees and Co-Chaired the Vision 2000 Campaign. She will be missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005, 11:00 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver, SE with Reverend Tom Beach officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver SE, 87108, to establish a scholarship fund in Nedra's name.
