Obituary for MICHNOVICZ

John J. "Mike" Michnovicz was born December 26, 1923 in West Frankfort, IL to Antoni and Stefania Michnovicz. He passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 21, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lou; and his children, Michael, Toni, and John Gibson, Andy and Ellen, Maria and Richard Frank, Jon and Steph, David and Charlotte, Stephanie, Mark, Paula, and Jeff Christofferson, Karla and Ian Thompson, Matthew and Marie, Patrick and Lorna, and Margo; and 22 grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph Koncz and wife, Fran in Oceanside, CA. Mike came to New Mexico in 1943 as a draftee as part of the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos where he worked as a documentary photographer. His photographs of the leadership at Los Alamos are now exhibited in museums across the country. In January 2005, a collection of his wartime photos was published. Mike's first love was accordion music and entertaining. As a popular accordion musician, he made music in Los Alamos and continued to perform in many clubs in Albuquerque during his lifetime. Private burial has taken place in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. A Rosary will be said on Friday, January 28, 2005 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE with Father Francis Eggert presiding. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
