Obituary for RINI

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday January 17, 2005

S. Jack Rini, 89, died peacefully after a short illness in the early morning of Sunday, January 9, 2005, at his residence at Montebello Senior Living Community, where he was twice president of the Resident's Association. He lived for many years in Los Chavez, NM, moving to the state from Memphis, TN, in 1977. S. Jack was born the son of Anna Lichtenberg Rini and Martin Rini on July 29, 1915. He was raised in Cleveland, OH. In 1936, he married Marjorie Herman who preceded him in death in 1980. He graduated, with his lifelong friend the late Edward Dyble of Albuquerque, from John Marshall High School and Case School of Applied Sciences (now Case Western Reserve) in Cleveland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He did extensive graduate work at the University of Chicago in chemical engineering of vegetable fats and oils. His career took him from Amazo in Hammond, IN, to Lever Brothers in Whiting, IN, and Boston, to Kraft Foods in Chicago, and then to Memphis where he was Vice President of Research and Production at Kraft's Humko subsidiary there. He was an emeritus lifetime member of the American Chemical Society which he joined in 1943. He was elected to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1949, and was an emeritus member of the Institute of Food Technologists. He was Director of the League for International Food Education from 1970 to 1982. His other interests included the Boy Scouts of America and bird watching. He was also the major investor in New Mexico's Century magazine in the early 1980s. His patents and inventions in food technology include "the Rini process" which makes margarine spreadable, and a chemically engineered solution to the problem of the "French ring," the circle of congealed material around the opening of French dressing bottles. He was an avid traveler, exploring the back country of America with his family, and traveling around the world and visiting as much of the planet as he could. He was a scholar and student of history and politics and the southwest. Mostly, he enjoyed his friends and his family. He was a profoundly loyal and generous parent, grandparent, and friend. His family misses him more than they can express. He is survived by children, Jacqueline Rini Fuqua, James P. Rini, and Rini Price and her husband, V.B. Price, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Christopher H. Fuqua of Albuquerque and Marshall R. Fuqua and wife, Jeri of Madrid, Iowa; by step-sons, Jody Price and Keir Price of New Jersey; and by one niece and many nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Talking Talons, Tijeras, NM, 281-1133, or to the League for International Food Education. The family is grateful for the aid of Lovelace Hospice.
