Obituary for YARBROUGH

Nina Yarbrough was born December 8, 1907 in Throckmorton County, Texas, to Marcus Willard and Martha Jane Jones Raper. She died Monday, December 13, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by both parents and by five siblings, Huey, Carl, Orville, Annie Dillard, and I.V. Freeman. Nina married George Samuel Yarbrough on December 22, 1928. From this 42-year marriage were born two children who survive her, Nina Mardelle Manes and husband, James of Tucson, AZ; and George Marcus Yarbrough and wife Kathryn of Albuquerque, NM. She is also survived by five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; Todd Manes; Darin and Molly Manes, Caitlin and Zachary; Laura and Keith Hurley; Jake and Lynita Yarbrough, Sofia and Gabriela; Emily and Thomas Smith, and Matthew. As a longtime educator in New Mexico, Nina was instrumental in shaping the lives of many children. She began her teaching career in 1928 in Harding County in a one-room school. Other assignments were in the communities of Roy, Mills, Quay, Causey, Dora, Floyd, and Moriarty. Mrs. Yarbrough retired in 1977. During her retirement years, Nina continued to give of herself to various volunteer activities in Portales. She was a member of First Baptist Church; Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 24; AAUW; and Retired Teachers' Association. She worked tirelessly at the Senior Citizens' Meal Site, both as a delivery person and as cashier and served on the Golden Acres Retirement Community Board of Directors. When asked to sum up her life, Nina once quoted, "Ask not what life can give you, but seek to serve your brother. The richest joys that man can know are those he shares with others." Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 18, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Portales with burial to follow in House, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that, in honor of all the children she taught to read, donations be made in her name to the Portales Public Library, 218 S. Ave. B, Portales, NM, 88130.
