Mary Stokes Ahern wife of the late Cornelius M. Ahern died December 1, 2004 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she resided since 1991. She was born in West Haven, CT on March 27, 1921 daughter of Frank and Helen Nix Stokes. She attended Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to retirement she was an insurance bookkeeper in New Haven, CT. She was a Past President of the New Haven, CT Association of Insurance Women, a member of the New Haven Gaelic and Hurling Club and a charter member of the Irish American Historical Society of New Haven. While residing in New Haven, CT she was appointed by Mayor Frank Logue to the Equal Opportunity Commission and was later appointed a Commissioner on the New Haven Civil Defense Advisory Board by Mayor Biagio DiLieto. From 1987 to 1991 she wrote a monthly column "Rememberin" for the New Haven Register. She is survived by: a daughter, Mary Ahern Sorcinelli of Albuquerque; a son, Attorney Anthony E. Ahern of Westport, CT; and a grandson, Alexander Ahern. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Kennedy and Rita O'Connor. Funeral from the Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm Street, West Haven, CT Tuesday at 9:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lawrence Church, West Haven, at 10:00 am. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. Friends may call prior to the funeral on Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30 am.
