Obituary for SEYMOUR

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday November 25, 2004

Jean Parrish Seymour, well known southwestern landscape artist and daughter of the famous illustrator, Maxfield Parrish, passed away quietly on November 19, 2004 at the Albuquerque Care Center where she had been a resident for four years. She was 93. Jean was born in Cornish, New Hampshire in the heyday of the flourishing art colony. She came in 1937 to Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the bride of Augustus T. (Joe) Seymour. They had one daughter, Anne. Their marriage came to an end in 1949, and this marked the beginning of Jean's long artistic career. She always painted under her maiden name, Jean Parrish. For an excellent review of her life, artistic abilities, and accomplishments please see MASTERS OF WESTERN ART, written by Mary Carroll Nelson, published 1982 by Watson-Guptill Publications. Occasionally her paintings can be found for sale on the Internet, but the vast majority of her work is still in private collections. Jean is survived by her daughter, Anne Seymour Heard; son-in-law, John Heard; two grandsons, David and Theodore Heard; granddaughter-in-law, Julieta; and two great-grandchildren, Andre and Camila. In accordance with Jean's wishes, her passing and her life will be celebrated with a festive gathering to be held in mid-January when her son-in-law will be back in country to participate. If you should wish to make a memorial offering please contribute to Art in the Schools, c/o APS Foundation, 6400 Uptown Blvd. N.E., Suite 490 West, Albuquerque, NM 87110 Anne S.
