Obituary for PETTIGREW

Lily Elizabeth Pettigrew (86) passed away on November 22, 2004 at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after an extended illness. She was the youngest of six children born to the late Joseph Edward Pettigrew II and Edith Lillian Wannamaker Pettigrew of 1117 Cherokee Road, Florence, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Greensboro College (now UNC Greensboro) in 1940, and obtained her Masters Degree at Vanderbilt University. She worked in Washington, D.C. as a personnel supervisor in the Veteran's Administration. She later became Chief of Personnel at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She retired from a very successful career with the Federal Government in 1974. She was very active in Civic clubs, and did extensive volunteer work with charitable, political, and literary groups serving in many capacities. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was devoted to her family and her heritage. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters, Edith Wannamaker Pettigrew, Frances Pettigrew Owen, and her brothers Joseph Edward Pettigrew, Jr., George Wannamaker Pettigrew, and James Alexander Pettigrew, sisters-in-law Margaret Elizabeth Ross Pettigrew, and Ruth Critcher Pettigrew. Surviving Elizabeth are nieces and nephews: Mary Frances Owen Hulberg and husband Chuck, George Wannamaker Pettigrew II and wife Linda, Joseph Edward (Ned) Pettigrew III, Gwynne Pettigrew Jeffords, Joy Pettigrew Ackerman and husband Bill, H. Timmons Pettigrew and wife Shirley, Nancy Ruth Pettigrew Robinson and husband Barry, William Edward (Bill) Pettigrew, and numerous devoted great and great-great nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by Waters-Powell Funeral Home, 400 S. Dargan Street, Florence, S.C. 29506. After a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 26, 2004, she will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery with her parents and other family members.
