Obituary for BLAKE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 14, 2004

Verne Eugene "Gene" Blake Jr., born September 26, 1925 went to be with the Lord on November 12, 2004. This precious husband, father, grandfather, and friend is survived by Gwendolyn, his wife of 40 years; son Gene Blake III, daughter Stephanie Whitlock and husband Wayne, son Christopher Blake and wife Selina; grandchildren Isabella Blake, Tiffany, Katelyn, Spencer, and Brayden Whitlock. A resident of Albuquerque since 1927, Gene was born in Ann Arbor Michigan. After graduating from Albuquerque High School, he went on to obtain a Bachelors and Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at U.N.M. After graduation Gene became a field engineer for the research and development division of the New Mexico School of Mines. In December of 1947 he began working at Sandia National Laboratory, where he remained until his retirement in April of 1983. Gene had a variety of engineering and supervisory assignments and eventually became manager of the Aerospace Nuclear Safety Department. He considered his efforts with Sandia's Strategic Systems Project most rewarding and always claimed to have been privileged to be involved in many of the Laboratory's most interesting projects. Following his retirement from Sandia, Gene decided to teach Computer Science at Temple Baptist Academy. Since he was passionate about camping, after a few years of teaching he retired again to fulfill a lifelong dream of driving to Alaska-not once, but twice. He loved time spent with his children and grandchildren. He always loved a good joke, a good meal, and he really enjoyed the challenge of repairing and restoring the unsalvageable. Not one of his family could want for anything more of him-except of course for more time. Anyone can go on to see him again if they put their faith in Jesus Christ and receive Him as their Lord and Savior as Gene did early in his life. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 17th at 11:00 am at Temple Baptist Church, 1613 Arizona NE. The family will have a private interment at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that should friends desire, contributions may be made in his honor to the Temple Baptist Missions Fund at 1613 Arizona NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
