Obituary for VAN DOMELEN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday November 01, 2004

Amy Lee Van Domelen died peacefully at her East Anchorage home in the company of family members during the early morning hours of October 27, 2004. She was 44 years old. Amy was born in Madison, Wisconsin on December 21, 1959, and grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from Sandia High School in 1977, and attended Kalamazoo College in Michigan to earn a Bachelors Degree in Economics in 1981. Amy moved to Anchorage later that year to work as a community planner for the Municipality. She relocated to St. Louis in 1988 to attend Washington University, where she received her Masters Degree in Business Administration with top class honors in 1990. Amy married David Sharfarz in 1989 and had one son, Daniel, in 1992. She stylishly balanced her active home life with a successful career in manufacturing operations, initially in the food industry in the Midwest, and later in the electronic communications industry in Colorado. She oversaw startup of new Pillsbury product lines at its Murfreesboro, Tennessee manufacturing facility; and designed and implemented data processing systems for EDS and NetLibrary.com in Boulder, Colorado. Amy was diagnosed with cancer in 1995, leading to the family's return to Anchorage in 2000. Amy was an avid gardener and enjoyed outdoor life, including kayaking, cross country skiing, and walking her dog. She developed a knack for stained glass and drew honorable mention at the 2002 Alaska State Fair. She was a gourmet cook, baker extraordinaire, and annually hosted a Sunday brunch for her many friends. Amy is survived by her husband of 15 years, David, and their 12-year old son, Daniel, both of Anchorage; father, Bruce of Albuquerque; sisters, Laura and Belinda of Denver; and brother, John of Dallas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah in 2002. No services will be held. However, a reception celebrating the life of Amy Lee Van Domelen will be held in Anchorage in May 2005. Gifts in memoriam may be directed to Daniel's college education fund.
